Education is Everything!

Several days ago I found out that I have received the honor of being nominated (for the second year in a row!) for Best Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist in Utah by KSL A List. I have been reflecting a lot about my 4 1/2 years in the business and am feeling so humbled by the amazing opportunities that life has handed me! There have been so many things that have helped mold me into the artist that I am today, both people and experiences, but what I feel is the driving factor was the education and mentoring that I received in the beginning.

I was so blessed to have had the opportunity to study at Taylor Andrews Academy of Hair Design. I decided to do hair a little later than most girls do (I had already been to several years of college) but I just had such a passion to work with people and help them better their perception of themselves. Having a sister who had done hair since high school, I was very aware of what it took to be in this business. I also felt really ready and prepared because I was pretty good at styling my own hair (looking back on it now, it kind of makes me giggle). I remember my first day of school I was shy and apprehensive. I was the oldest one in my class and was not as stylish or up to date as most girls. I was also married and felt really out of place. My first week was a little tough. I remember how awkward it was to wash someone's hair for the first time! And blowing out someone's hair for the first time... well lets just say that there were a lot of laughs involved. Good thing it was just a mannequin! I remember coming home that first week and feeling discouraged. Maybe this wasn't what I was meant to do! I couldn't decide if I wanted to laugh at myself or cry. But I pushed forward because I wasn't about to give up! The following week our location was invited to join a class at the West Jordan location. I remember going and being so inspired by Babak. I knew that this is what I was meant to do and that if I worked hard great things and experiences would come my way. From that day on I made it a goal to never stop being inspired. To find inspiration in the smallest things. I changed my outlook and my life changed. I took endless notes (all of which I still refer back to!). I knew that I had an opportunity that most others did not because of the school I chose. I am forever indebted to the staff and instructors at Taylor Andrews. What they taught me continues to inspire me daily. As I learned more about hair, I decided that I was also very passionate about makeup and wanted to pursue Taylor Andrews Makeup Artistry Course. What an amazing opportunity that was, and it laid the foundation for what I am truly passionate about now!

From that time on, my yearning for knowledge has never stopped! I take time out of every day to learn something new, work with a new product, and push myself to reach my potential!

Looking back, I am so grateful that I didn't give up that first week in school. I am abundantly blessed because of the motivation and mentor ship that I gained from my instructors.

I can honestly tell you that I learned from the best of the best! Whether I was learning makeup, hair, business essentials, etc, I did my best to soak in every detail. I feel so honored and privileged to have the education that I have had, especially now that I am in the industry. So many people that I have had the chance to work with were not blessed with the same caliber of education and I am continually trying to pay it forward because I have been so blessed!

I went from feeling awkward and incompetent to having my work featured on magazine covers, films, national wedding blogs, ad campaigns, rubbing shoulders with incredible professionals, working on endless photoshoots, and also getting to travel all over the country and work with the best clients out there!

If you get nothing else out of this post, please remember this: Never stop being inspired! Excel in everything you do, and be grateful for the opportunities that you are given! Education will lay down the foundation that you need to succeed in this life, if only you soak in every morsel you are given. If you have a solid foundation, then experience will help build the mansion of your life! Never give up!

Alice in Modernland

For those of you who know me personally, you probably know that I am an Alice in Wonderland addict! I love all things Wonderland and even had an Alice in Wonderland themed wedding. So you probably wouldn't be surprised to know that I was elated to work on this photoshoot!! We had five AMAZING and beautiful models, all of whom represent a character from Alice. You will see Alice herself, the Red Queen, the White Queen, the Mad Hatter, and the Rabbit. My goal was to keep everyone very modern looking and fresh. We wanted it to be an elegant wedding fantasy type shoot! I hope you enjoy these beautiful photos!!

We also had an amazing team of vendors to help us pull it all off!!

Katie's Wedding

I absolutely loved working with Katie and her cute family! Katie was married at the Lomond View Gardens Reception Center! It was a really hot day, so it was very important to her that her makeup was durable! I also had the privilege of doing her mother and mother-in-laws makeup!
